Chennai, Sept 1: A family court in the city has issued an arrest warrant against an 89-year-old man who had recently made news by divorcing his 80-year-old wife, as he did not pay her alimony of Rs 1,500 for the last few months, thereby violating the court order.
Simpson Kannan and his wife Rajalakshmi were married in 1949 and have several children and grandchildren.
A few months ago, Simpson filed a divorce petition claiming that his wife and children were harassing him both physically and mentally.
The family court also granted the couple a divorce and ordered that the petitioner pay an alimony amount to his ex-wife to meet her expenses.
As Simpson failed to pay the alimony amount to Rajalakshmi, the woman filed a petition against him for violating the court order and demanded that the court intervene and ensure that the octogenarian paid her Rs 1,500 every month as directed by the courts.
After considering the petition, the family court had ordered Kannan to present himself before the court and give an explanation for not paying the alimony amount to her.
However, the old man did not turn up at the court when the petition was heard and, as a result, the court issued an arrest warrant against him.
Reacting to the court order, Simpson told the media that he did not have any source of income to give alimony.
“I can pay her Rs 1,500 only if my children give me money. But they don’t,” Simpson said.
